Clive Long Food and Farming awards – Totnes, Devon

Feb 19, 2013

I would never suggest that blogs and Facebook are for the self-obsessed with too much time on their hands. And as I am a serious and important person with lots of serious and important things to do, this blog post will be brief (-ish).

Why do we, in the UK, buy blueberries from Chile in February (as confirmed in Totnes Morissons) or tasteless strawberries in November grown under glass in Spain? Why are millions paid into the european agricultural policy? Why are we being bazookaed by arguments that we need GM seeds that are resistant to the insecticides from Monsanto? Why is half the food purchased in the world thrown away but “food” is produced that does not contain what it purports to contain?

On a more positive note, it is still possible to buy good tasting food, well cooked and beautifully presented. Ladies and gentlemen, I offer for your consideration the Britannia at the Beach at Beesands, Devon.
